NYS Driving Youth Empowerment and Supporting Food Security Initiatives Through the Talismanis Construction Project
In efforts to strengthen sustainable agricultural development while empowering youth with practical skills, the National Youth Service (NYS), through its Production Unit Division, secured a project earlier this year and is currently undertaking a community construction project at Talismanis in the Omaheke Region. This initiative forms part of broader Government efforts to contribute to improving food production in semi-arid regions by introducing modern, climate-smart infrastructure.
As part of the ongoing project, the Service is responsible for the installation of shade nets, the establishment of a fully integrated drip irrigation system, and the deployment of a solar-powered pump system. The scope of work further includes fencing the site, managing various site components, and providing general operational support to ensure efficient implementation.
Currently, two of the three planned shade nets have been successfully completed, with drip irrigation systems installed, and a fully operational solar-powered system. The control point, including fertigation tanks, has also been completed, enabling the efficient distribution of both water and nutrients to crops. Work is currently ongoing on the third shade net, with construction activities steadily progressing toward completion.
This project highlights the Service’s contribution to the socio-economic development of Namibia, while strengthening food production initiatives and supporting sustainable agriculture.

NYS and Omaheke Region Move to Strengthen Agricultural Development
On 05 June 2026, the National Youth Service (NYS), led by Commissioner Dr. Felix Musukubili, held a strategic meeting with the Governor of Omaheke Region, Honourable Pijoo Nganate, and the Executive Vice President of Swakop Uranium Husab Mine, Mr. Irvinne Simataa, as the key project funders, to assess the Farm Nuwe Hoop Project, located in Gobabis, Omaheke Region and explore its transformation into a modern shade-net agricultural facility. This engagement followed the Governor’s visit to the Talismanis project, where he was impressed by the quality of work delivered by NYS and expressed interest in replicating a similar model in Omaheke.
The NYS team had conducted a site visit on 04 June 2026, identifying the need to rehabilitate existing dilapidated structures and introduce a more structured layout incorporating shade nets, improved irrigation systems, and expanded production space. Central to the discussions was the upgrading of water infrastructure, including the installation of storage tanks, rehabilitation of a nearby dam, and development of a reliable irrigation system to ensure consistent water supply for crop production.
The parties emphasized the importance of integrating mentorship and youth participation into the project, with NYS agriculturalists working alongside local youth to build capacity and ensure sustainability. The project is intended not only to address food security, but also to serve as a demonstration of effective collaboration between Government, NYS, and development partners.
The engagement reflects a shared commitment to delivering a high-impact agricultural initiative that will contribute to regional development, youth empowerment within the region, and long-term sustainability.
