Under Ireland's Presidency of the Council of the EU, the Embassy was delighted to organise on 7 of October a visit for a delegation of EU Ambassadors and diplomats to two of Romania’s most dynamic and vibrant cities, Târgu Mureș and Cluj-Napoca. Rich in cultural heritage, diversity, innovation and academic excellence, both cities showcased the talent, entrepreneurial spirit and strong European values that are helping shape Romania’s future.

Led by Ambassador Brendan Ward, the delegation included representatives from the Embassies of Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Lithuania, Portugal, Slovakia and Sweden.

The programme began in Târgu Mureș- Primăria Târgu Mureș - Marosvásárhely Polgármesteri Hivatala, a city renowned for its multicultural character and harmonious coexistence of communities. The delegation learned about the city's important role in Romania's economy, particularly in the fields of healthcare, education, pharmaceuticals, food production and industry. A highlight of the visit was a guided tour of the magnificent Palace of Culture, hosted by Mayor Soós Zoltán, whom we warmly thank for his hospitality and welcome.

The visit concluded in Cluj-Napoca, where friends and partners from across local authorities, diplomacy, business and culture came together to celebrate strong connections that unite Ireland, Romania and the European Union. We were honoured to welcome Prefect Mrs Maria Forna, Vice-President of Cluj County Council Mr István Vakar, and Deputy Mayor Mrs Emese Olah. Guests also enjoyed a cultural programme featuring performances by Vlad Câmpean and William Fielding of We Are Classics, as well as readings from the work of Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney, offering a glimpse into Ireland's rich literary and artistic heritage.

The Embassy of Ireland extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed to the success of this event. Special thanks go to our partners Enterprise Ireland, Romania Ireland Business Association - RIBA, and Mihai Onaca, and to our sponsors Betfair Romania Development and Jameson Irish Wh***ey. Their support helps strengthen cultural, commercial and people-to-people ties. Also, our sincere thanks to our Honorary Consul in Cluj, Mr. Simon-Piers O`Mahony.

Nestled behind Niamh’s ear are Romania’s and Ireland’s national flowers. The Romanian peony (Bujor) and the Irish Shamrock (Shamróg) are both heavily woven into the traditional folklore, music, and art of their respective nations.

Throughout Irish history the meaning of the Shamrock has morphed with the prevailing religious beliefs, but the three leafed plant has always been central to Irish life. The Romanian peony has like wise persisted as a defining symbol in Romania though its meaning and place has altered little to the Romanian people.

Both flowers are used as symbols of honour for veterans in their respective state. The shamrock is prominently used by Irish regiments and featured in traditional military heraldry. Similarly, the red Romanian peony is used as the official floral symbol of Veterans' Day in Romania to honour fallen soldiers.

Niamh’s attire especially her Irish triskele earring and her Romanian embroidered blouse celebrates the intangible cultural heritage that is abundant in both Ireland and Romania. Our ancient symbols are literally woven into the fabric of our lives and instantly recognisable to others outside our communities.

The Romanian embroidered blouse is a work of art that symbolises Romanian resilience, unity, and deep reverence for nature. The Irish triskele—also called the triskelion or triple spiral—is one of Ireland's oldest and most profound spiritual symbols, representing perpetual motion, personal growth, and the sacred power of threes. The deep significance of these symbols has helped them remain prominent in Romanian and Irish communities across the world.

This prominence has brought the traditional motifs and colours into fashion, art, and media in Romania and Ireland. The integration of our cultural heritage in a contemporary modes is shown in Niamh’s hoodie which sits seamlessly with our ancient symbols.
