The San Francisco City Attorney's office has been regarded as a national model for public law offices, bringing landmark cases to protect and expand the rights of San Franciscans while providing high quality legal counsel to about 100 city departments, boards and commissions. On November 1, 2021, David Chiu was sworn in as San Francisco City Attorney and became the first Asian American to lead the office.

Our Office submitted an amicus brief in Louisiana v. FDA to urge the U.S. Supreme Court to maintain access to medication abortion. Yesterday, SCOTUS issued an order to continue allowing telehealth and mail access to mifepristone, a widely used abortion pill.

Our Office joined a nationwide coalition in filing an amicus brief to urge the U.S. Supreme Court to keep Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrian and Haitian immigrants. TPS holders are part of our communities and economies. Ending TPS would have immediate and devastating consequences for more than a million people across the country.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently proposed a rule that would ban families with mixed immigration statuses from living together in federally assisted housing. Our Office submitted a public comment expressing our strong opposition.
