Community, labor, elected and healthcare leaders from across our region joined together to have our voices heard in a call for Healthcare for ALL! We will not be silent, we will not allow the cuts of HR1 to further devastate our community. This is a healthcare crisis, our systems are failing, so we must pass new revenue for the County safety net public health clinics and the county hospital, Harborview. Residents and patients are going to rely ever more on our County clinics and hospital, so we must step up now as we call for universal healthcare.

Yesterday at our Budget & Fiscal Management Committee, I unveiled my proposal to shore up our public health safety net with two property taxes that the State Legislature gave us authority to levy. Now is not the time to sit on our hands and wait and see how bad things can get, or to wait for a different tax authority - we already know from decades of failed public health policy what happens when people don't have access to healthcare, and it impacts every one of us. Now is the time to act, because the worst is still to come as HR1 continues to take effect. King County residents need to see that their Council stands with them, that we understand that all of our collective public health is interconnected, and that we will still continue to advocate for progressive revenue tools to be able to step in when the federal government fails them.

If you've been following me on social media anytime in the past handful of months, you've seen that I have been sounding the alarm on the devastating impacts of the Big Bad Bill for a long time. As of this month, the first cuts are upon us, with hundreds of thousands more people at risk of losing coverage in the new year. The time is now for King County to take decisive action to protect our social safety net public health system. No one else is coming to save us - we have to save our own people with every tool at our disposal.

D8 shoutout! Roxana Pardo Garcia, co-founder and Executive Director of Alimentando al Pueblo, and our Latino community in South KC were featured in a Seattle Times article this week! I’m thrilled for anyone to learn about the incredible work this org does, and this is only a snapshot. Roxana pours her whole heart into this work, which is why I was proud to honor her with a MLK Service Award in my first year as a County Councilmember and have continued to advocate for them in our budget in the years since. I appreciate our federal delegation for speaking to this issue, and our local media for covering it. I will continue to sound the alarm on these disastrous healthcare cuts. They will impact all of us, whether directly or indirectly. As our federal partners continue their work to undo the damage done by this harmful bill, King County has an opportunity - and, I would argue, a duty - to step in and try to insulate our residents from it with the tools our state legislature gave us and support Harborview and our King County Public Health clinics.

Was very sad to miss the grand opening of Creekside Village on Vashon Island due to illness, but I could not be more proud of the work, partnership, and care that went in to this project! I know how much affordable homeownership opportunities mean for Vashonites old and new, and I'm celebrating right along with you in spirit!

It was great to join Libby and David on Soundside yesterday to talk about the devastating cuts to Medicaid that have just gone into effect, the cuts still to come in January, and the tools King County has to mitigate all of this harm. You can listen to the full episode at the link in my story, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Starting this month, 11,000 refugees, asylum seekers, and other lawfully present immigrants in Washington state lost their Medicaid coverage, including 4,000 immigrants in King County alone.

In January 2027, an additional 215,000 King County residents could see their Medicaid coverage affected after the implementation of new work requirements and more frequent eligibility checks. These changes are the result of cuts outlined in the Trump administration’s HR1.

The cuts will have effects beyond those that are losing their coverage - hospitals and clinics will be overwhelmed, driving up wait times for all patients. I’m calling on my colleagues to offset the strain on the public health system by passing property taxes that were authorized by the state Legislature earlier this year.
