Local councils play an important role in shaping the future of Queensland’s regional communities, particularly as resources and energy development continues across the state.

This week, Coexistence Queensland joined the Land Access Ombudsman Queensland at the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) Annual Conference in Cairns.

It was a great opportunity to connect with local government representatives from across Queensland, hear about the issues and priorities affecting their communities, and share how we support positive coexistence between landholders, communities and industry.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by our stand to share their experiences, insights and local perspectives. These connections help us better understand the opportunities and challenges facing communities across Queensland.

🌦️ A little preparation now can make a big difference when severe weather arrives.

It's Get Ready Queensland Week (5–11 October), a reminder for all Queenslanders to prepare for storms, floods, bushfires and other emergencies.

For regional and rural communities, severe weather can mean more than damage to homes and property. Flooded roads, disrupted communications and access to essential services can have lasting impacts on families, farms and local businesses.

It's also an important time for resource and energy companies operating in regional communities to review their emergency arrangements and communication processes.

Whether you're a landholder, community member or industry representative, take some time this week to review your plans, understand local risks and check in with those around you.

Community workshops are taking place across the region to help inform the Queensland Government's Taroom Trough Development Plan.

Residents are invited to share their local knowledge, ask questions and identify the opportunities, impacts and concerns they believe should be considered in future planning.

October is Indigenous Business Month – celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses, entrepreneurs and organisations across Queensland.

Supporting strong regional communities means thinking about how development can create meaningful opportunities for the people and businesses already in those communities.

Local procurement, employment, partnerships and supply-chain opportunities can all help ensure the benefits of energy and resources development are shared locally. Indigenous businesses have an important role to play in that – bringing local knowledge, capability and connections to projects and regional economies.

Our own experience of working with First Nations owned and led businesses has been incredibly valuable. The relationships and partnerships we have built have not only produced excellent work but also introduced us to new perspectives and ways of working – strengthening our understanding of the communities we work alongside.

Many of those relationships have grown through events, networking opportunities and introductions like those taking place during Indigenous Business Month.

🌱 Have you been involved in biodiversity or habitat restoration on your property?

Researchers from The University of Queensland are speaking with farmers and landholders about their experiences of planning, implementing, maintaining, and monitoring restoration projects.

The Landholder Restoration Experiences project is looking at what has worked well, what has been challenging, and what could make future restoration programs more practical and effective for landholders.

Around 20 landholders have already shared their experiences, and the research team is hoping to speak with approximately 20 more from across Australia.

These conversations will help inform a report providing practical advice to government about how land and water restoration efforts by private landholders can be better supported – while also highlighting examples of landholder-led restoration.

Interviews can take place on-property or by phone, Teams or Zoom.

📣 Have your say on Queensland’s Financial Provisioning Scheme

The Queensland Government is reviewing the Financial Provisioning Scheme (FPS), which helps manage the financial risks associated with rehabilitation of resource sites.

Have you had experience with the Scheme – as a landholder, resource operator or explorer, financial or surety provider, consultant, community organisation or other stakeholder? Or do you have practical experience of issues such as rehabilitation and decommissioning, financial assurance, risk classification or resource asset transfers? Your experience could help inform the review.

The review is considering whether the scheme remains effective and fit for purpose, including how it balances environmental protection and financial risk with investment and responsible resources development. It will also look at issues including risk classifications, smaller and mid-tier operators, and the treatment of abandoned mines.

You can provide feedback through an online survey, upload a written submission, or make a submission by email.

Updated resource for Queensland landholders 👇

Queensland Farmers' Federation has released an updated edition of its Queensland Renewable Energy Landholder Toolkit, with practical guidance for landholders considering renewable energy proposals on their property.

The refreshed toolkit reflects recent changes across the sector, including hybrid and battery storage projects, planning requirements and expectations around community consultation.

It also provides useful information to help landholders understand the process, prepare for conversations with proponents and make informed decisions about what is right for their property and business.

QFF has recently released an updated edition of the Queensland Renewable Energy Landholder Toolkit (the Toolkit), giving Queensland landholders access to refreshed, practical and current guidance for navigating renewable energy proposals on their property.

First launched in 2023, the Toolkit has been revised following extensive consultation with landholders, developers, local councils, government bodies, and legal and financial professionals.

The updated edition reflects changes across the sector since the Toolkit was first published, including the shift towards hybrid and battery storage projects, changes to planning legislation, and a higher standard of community engagement now expected of project proponents.
