The World Oceans Day 2026 theme, "Reimagine: Beyond the World We Know, A New Relationship with Our Ocean," reminds us that healthy oceans are essential to building resilient communities.

At ODPEM, we recognise that healthy oceans play a vital role in reducing disaster risk and protecting coastal communities. Coral reefs, mangroves, and other marine ecosystems serve as natural barriers against storm surges, coastal erosion, and flooding.
This World Ocean Day, we encourage all Jamaicans to help protect our oceans by reducing pollution, disposing of waste responsibly, and supporting conservation efforts.

Protect Our Oceans. Reduce Disaster Risk. Build Resilience.

40 years ago, the June 1986 Floods became one of Jamaica’s worst flood disasters, claiming 50 lives, displacing 2,000 people, and causing millions in damage.

As we remember those affected, let us renew our commitment to preparedness and resilience. 🇯🇲
