DENR-FMB and LGU Team Up to Boost Forest Management in Eastern Mindanao

Personnel from the DENR Regional and Field Offices, alongside Local Government Units (LGUs) representatives from the Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor (EMBC), are participating in a Trainers’ Training on Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) Planning from October 26 to 30, 2026.

This activity is a part of Component 3.3 under the DENR–UNDP/GEF Biodiversity Corridor Project. The project aims to reduce habitat fragmentation in Mindoro and Eastern Mindanao through sustainable forest management and collaborative action.

Designed to address technical knowledge gaps and enhance local planning capacity, the five-day training equips participants with the knowledge, practical tools, and facilitation skills needed to guide local communities in developing five-year SFM plans. Course sessions cover ecological assessment, community engagement, and sustainable livelihoods, enabling participants to translate core concepts into actionable forest management strategies and foster community participation.

Resource speakers and facilitators for the training are drawn from Caraga State University, Davao Oriental State University, the EMB Project Management Unit, the DENR–Forest Management Bureau, and the Palec and Amigos Urban Environ Forestry Support Services.

Meet santol (Sandoricum koetjape), a tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. Its ripe fruits are enjoyed fresh for their sweet and tangy taste or processed into candied treats and marmalades, giving them a sweeter second life.

Beyond its sweet preparations, santol also shines in heirloom Filipino dishes like sinigang and sinantolan, having graced Filipino tables for generations.

Enjoy santol however you like, but remember: swallowing its seeds can cause serious intestinal blockages or perforations. Be sure to discard them and save yourself a trip to the hospital!

The Forest Management Bureau (FMB) conducted a lecture series entitled, “Tuklas Pilipinas: Statistics as Beacon Towards Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Tourism,” in support of the celebration of 37th National Statistics Month at Culiat High School on October 20, 2026, followed by Tandang Sora National High School on October 21, 2026.

This initiative aimed to promote awareness of the importance of tourism, highlight the role of statistics and data in sustainable tourism planning and decision-making, and encourage youth participation in promoting inclusive and sustainable tourism. It highlighted the importance of statistics and data in understanding the role of tourism in national and local development. It also emphasized the importance of reliable data in tourism planning, policy formulation, and decision-making toward the development of an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable tourism sector.

Spearheaded by the FMBs Forest Policy, Planning, and Knowledge Management Division, the activity sought to deepen students' understanding of sustainable tourism, and data-driven decision-making. The lectures covered 5 key areas: an overview of the FMBs mandate and programs, Forests and Sustainable Tourism in the Philippines, Nature Interpretation in the Context of the Philippines, Making Sense of Tourism Data and Youth and Sustainable Tourism: What Can You Do? Interactive discussions, multimedia presentations, and an engaging Interactive Quiz/Game: Tuklas Pilipinas reinforced these lessons.

Through this initiative, FMB reaffirmed its commitment to advancing data-driven governance, environmental education, and meaningful youth engagement. By connecting the statistics with the value of the country’s forests to ecotourism destinations, the Bureau hopes to nurture a generation that can shape tourism that benefits local communities, safeguards biodiversity, and preserves the Philippines’ natural treasures for generations to come.

RATTAN: UNWEAVING ITS CULINARY POTENTIALS!

When you hear the word rattan, probably what comes to your mind are woven baskets, chairs to beautifully crafted furnitures, right?

Rattan has long been valued for its flexible stems. Commonly known as yantok, rattan belongs to the palm family (Arecaceae) and widely recognized for its use as a raw material for furniture and handicrafts.

But did you know that certain rattan species have something else to offer beyond handicrafts? Yes, they also produces edible fruits.

Covered in distinctive, overlapping scales, some edible rattan fruits pack a suprisingly sour flavor. One example is Calamus manillensis, locally known as littuko, whose fruits have been used as natural souring ingredients or pampaasim in FIlipino dishes like our favorite sour soup dish, sinigang.

And there's another interesting fact! The use of rattan fruits in making w**e has also been documented, showcasing another value-added potential of this non-timber forest product.

HAPPENING NOW | FMB ORIENTS FOREST TENURE HOLDERS ON THE STANDARD SELF-COMPLIANCE MONITORING FORM
October 20, 2026 | Online via Zoom

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Forest Management Bureau (DENR-FMB) is conducting the Tenure Holder Orientation on the Standard Self-Compliance Monitoring Form today, October 20, 2026, via Zoom, to strengthen partnership with our forest tenure holders and other concerned stakeholders.

The activity aims to guide forest tenure holders in complying with the provisions of DENR Administrative Order (DAO) No. 2025-22, particularly the requirements for compliance monitoring, performance evaluation, and reporting. It also seeks to promote a clearer and more consistent approach to accomplishing the Standard Self-Compliance Monitoring Form and preparing the necessary supporting documents and evidence.

The orientation features a walkthrough of the technical bulletin on what forest tenure holders need to know, followed by a hands-on demonstration of the Standard Self-Compliance Monitoring Form. Through the discussions and open forum, participants have the opportunity to raise questions, clarify compliance requirements, and better understand their respective responsibilities, including the required submissions, schedules, documentary evidence, and other important compliance reminders.

The activity forms part of FMB's continuing efforts to support forest tenure holders in fulfilling their obligations and to promote more consistent, transparent, and effective monitoring of forest tenure instruments in the Philippines.

The Forest Management Bureau (FMB) will be conducting an Orientation on the Self-Compliance Monitoring (SCM) Form on 20 October 2026 (Tuesday), at 9:30 AM via Zoom.

WHAT’S NEW?
With the prospective issuance of the Technical Bulletin entitled “Procedural Guide on the Conduct of Compliance Monitoring, Performance Evaluation, Audit, and Submission of Accomplishments for all Forest Tenure Instruments,” the Annual Accomplishment Report (AAR) will transition to the Self-Compliance Monitoring (SCM) Form, which shall be submitted annually on or before March 31.

WHAT TO EXPECT
This orientation aims to familiarize and guide Forest Tenure Instrument Holders on the proper accomplishment and submission of the SCM Form, including the information and supporting details required for compliance monitoring.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
All concerned Forest Tenure Instrument Holders (SFLMA, IFMA, SIFMA, FLGMA, FLAg, FLAgT, SLUP, GSUP, and UA) are encouraged to participate and learn about the new SCM reporting requirements.

Alam mo ba na nag-iiba ang mga pangangailangan ng mga puno depende sa panahon? Kaya bukod sa pagtatanim, mahalaga ring malaman kung anong mga dapat gawin upang mapanatiling malusog ang mga punla at matulungan ang mga ito na lumago.

Sa 4, alamin ang mga gawaing pang-reforestation tuwing tag-araw at tag-ulan. Karaniwang ginagawa ang pagtatanim sa panahon ng tag-ulan, habang higit na binibigyang-pansin sa tag-araw ang maintenance, protection, at paghahanda para sa susunod na panahon ng pagtatanim. 🌿

The Forest Management Bureau informs all applicants for Sustainable Forest Land Management Agreement (SFLMA) that payment of application fees on October 19, 2026, will be accepted only until 3:00 PM.

Please be guided by the following schedule:

📌 October 19, 2026, until 3:00 PM – Last day and time for payment acceptance before the temporary suspension.

📌 October 19, 2026, from 3:00 PM until October 22, 2026 – FMB will not accept application fee payments.

📌 October 26, 2026 – Resumption of application fee payment acceptance and processing.

All concerned applicants are advised to plan their payments accordingly and take note of the above schedule.
