🌸Blossoming Harmony: Ikenobo Ikebana and the Way of Tea 🍵✨
JCC, Ikenobo Mizuma Chapter and Chado Urasenke Tankokai Singapore Association hosted a talk and Ikebana demonstration by Mizuma Chapter Head Ms Matsukuma Rumiko, on 27 October. This programme was part of the second half of the “SJ60 Chado Exhibition 2026”, exploring how ikebana and the tea ceremony intertwine harmoniously.
Ms Matsukuma, a highly ranked instructor (Katoku 華督) from the Ikenobo School of Ikebana, shared the history of Ikenobo and the Rikka style used in tea gatherings. After She then demonstrated a Shōka arrangement using young pine tree branches from Japan and white iris flowers. Through her demonstration, she explained the key components of of the Shōka style – Shin (representing Heaven), Soe (representing Human), and Tai (representing Earth). In attendance was also Dr Leonard Lim, President of the Ikenobo Singapore Chapter, who shared his valuable expertise.
Guests were also brought on a guided tour of the Ikebana arrangements on display, each showcasing a different style of Ikenobo. Guests also posed questions about the symbolism behind certain techniques, and appreciated both the floral richness of Ikenobo and the wabi spirit of Sen no Rikyu’s Way of Tea.
