Rhubarb has a very high content of oxalic acid, especially in the leaves. While there is debate about how much oxalic acid is in the stalks, depending on the rate of plant growth and season, it is not worth taking a chance with your birds’ health. Best to avoid this vegetable altogether. Your birds will be happy to devour other safe treats.

The Hamburg Chicken comes in six standard varieties recognized by the American Poultry Association. The one pictured is a beautiful Golden Penciled hen.

The Hamburg is considered an ornamental bird, but they are a threatened bread in need of conservation. They can fly and are known to roost high up in trees. Their flighty nature is one that has helped them dodge predators and they happen to be good egg layers. They love to forage and roam. They love having large spaces instead of confinement.

Share any pics of your Hamburg flock-members with us and we will feature them on our page.

🦉Its and we are celebrating them with a good public service announcement if you have chickens. Owls, like the Great Horned owl pictured, will try to have a chicken dinner if they live in your area. These and other raptors are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

🛡️Safeguard your flock from owls and other raptors by:
🔐Secure your birds in their coop overnight
🎪Cover their run with a solid roof (this also shields them from wild bird droppings)
🛠️Inspect and repair loose or damaged areas on your coop walls, ventilation, and roof.

Nothing says Biosecurity like . It’s okay to be EGGstra instead of basic? Tag someone to remind them to wash their hands.

Did you know? There are over 2,000 different varieties of Salmonella. Salmonella enteritidis (SE) is just one of the many, but it is one that is linked to foodborne Illness. In infected hens SE can contaminate the inside of eggs before they are even formed This is why the FDA requires routine and repeated testing of commercial egg laying flocks.

Hens can pass SE to their chicks as the egg is being formed. Contaminated environments, diseased rodents, and infected feed are all potential sources of infection in flocks. Buying birds from National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) breeders and practicing biosecurity are your best defense against SE.

Learn more about biosecurity through these bilingual poultry workshop videos.
