FARM TO SCHOOL: if you want an example of a successful program, check out the Minnesota Department of Agriculture Farm to Kids Grant program. This program allows MDA to give $$ to help local schools connect with and buy from local farmers for school meals. Glad to tour today to see how Mankato Area Public Schools Mankato Area Public Schools purchase food and dairy from local farmers and see improvements in school meal nutrition, taste, and just to help kids better understand where our food comes from. We visited the MAPS pre school lunch room today and saw a lot of smiling faces. TOUR OF DUTY: one of the best parts of this job is being invited to tour various facilities, schools, and businesses in our district. Very grateful to visit two: CHS Inc and Palmer Bus Service of Mankato. Thx to hosts at both facilities for the tour, for the jobs they support and the local support they give to our community.

Did you know Palmer Bus employs about 1200 school bus drivers statewide (including other locations outside our area)? Yep. Our students are lucky to have the safe reliable transportation.

Did you know that CHS processes about 200 semi truckloads of soybeans a day here? Yes, and btw Mankato processes more soybeans than any city in the country. Just saying. CHS also has the largest “deodorizer” (handling one step in the process) in the country - it processes 4.6 million pounds of soybeans AN HOUR.

Thx again to everybody at both facilities. Really appreciate the time getting to know your operations better.

JUG GAME: last night saw the annual Mankato East v Mankato West rivalry football game, played for The Jug - the travelling trophy that is now over. 50 years old. The game is one of the most public signs of how strong our local schools, students, athletes and communities are. Played at Blakeslee Field on the Minnesota State University, Mankato campus, the stands were full. The players and fans enjoyed the evening. Congrats to everybody who make this night special.

Those are nights the students, athletes and families will long remember. It just goes to prove the saying “It’s just GREAT to be a kid!”

SCHOOL SPIRIT! Truly, one of the highlights of each year is attending the school year kickoff hosted by Mankato Area Public Schools. Almost 1000 local teachers staff and students are there - and all flying the various school colors and fight songs as well! We are incredibly proud of all our local schools: the students, the parents - and the men and women who make our schools run.

We gathered for dinner and discussion at the Courtland Community Center and heard from members young and old about the issues that matter. Everybody loves a county fair! Glad to spend time at the Nicollet County MN fair in City of Saint Peter, Minnesota, and meet with great folks (young and old) from all over the area. Thx to our fair organizers, vendors, and staff.

This news shows Minnesota has to do better in how we support MSU Mankato. The state has an obligation to each campus to support and be a good partner. Needless to say, with our university seeing record enrollment, excellent faculty, and overall the Maverick students getting a great education, we’d like to get the word out. As for the budget news here from KEYC News Now, we will review at both the state and local level.
