The Meteorological Service was developed in Jamaica as an adjunct of the British Government’s Air Ministry.

Meteorological activities were expanded to include synoptic weather forecasting, particularly for aviation and marine interests.

A quiet hurricane season is not a finished one.

In this clip, Evan Thompson, Principal Director of the Meteorological Service of Jamaica speaks with Cliff Hughes from Nationwide News Network on the programme, OPM On Air.

He explains that El Niño's development and its impact on the Atlantic were predicted. The Atlantic has been unusually quiet, but the season runs through November 30, and a late-season system could still move into the Caribbean and affect Jamaica.

Now is the time to review your family's hurricane plan and check your emergency supplies.

October is normally our wettest month. This year, the rain won't be enough to close the gap until the official dry season.

In this clip, Evan Thompson, Principal Director of the Meteorological Service of Jamaica speaks with Cliff Hughes from Nationwide News Network on the programme, OPM On Air.

He explains that El Niño is still building, that rainfall is projected to remain below normal through October, and that dry conditions will continue until the phenomenon eases. Below-normal doesn't mean no rain, but starting from a deficit means we won't return to normal levels.

WEATHER FORECAST

A trough across the western Caribbean will continue to influence Jamaica’s weather through the end of the week, with windy conditions expected, especially across southern parishes and hilly areas.

🌙 TONIGHT
Lingering showers and thunderstorms are expected across western parishes.
Elsewhere, expect partly cloudy conditions.

🌤️ TOMORROW MORNING
Partly cloudy conditions are expected.
It will become windy along southern coastal areas.

⛈️ TOMORROW AFTERNOON & EVENING
Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected across western and north-central parishes.
Expect mostly cloudy and windy conditions, particularly across southern parishes and hilly areas.

📍 Some areas to watch:
Western Jamaica: Thundershowers and showers are possible, especially in the afternoon.
Southern Jamaica: Windy conditions are expected, with cloudiness increasing in the afternoon.
Northern Jamaica: Mostly cloudy conditions, with afternoon showers and thunderstorms possible in some areas.

🌧️ Take extra care if you’re travelling or spending time outdoors, particularly in areas expecting thunderstorms or strong winds.

So… what does 1.65°C have to do with Jamaica? More than you might think.

August 2026 tied July 2023 as the warmest month globally on record, with temperatures reaching 1.65°C above temperatures before industrialisation.

At the same time, El Niño is strengthening, with record-high surface air temperatures recorded in the tropical Pacific.

A warming climate has far-reaching implications for Jamaica; from our water resources, coastlines and marine ecosystems to our livelihoods, homes and communities.

So, how is your community adapting to the heat?
