The Power of Preservation

Preservation plays an important role in protecting our history, memories, and cultural heritage for future generations. The National Library of Namibia demonstrates the power of preservation by keeping valuable publications, newspapers, books, and other historical materials that tell the stories of our lives and our nation.
During an educational tour at the National Library of Namibia, a student experienced a special moment when she discovered her own picture in the Republikein newspaper dated 31 July 2007. To her great excitement and happiness, she found the birthday wishes that had been published in celebration of her first birthday. This experience showed that preservation gives the past a lasting place in the present, allowing even the smallest personal moments to become meaningful treasures for years to come.

Second-year senior primary teaching students from UNAM had an opportunity to visit the National Library of Namibia for an educational tour. The students are taking Youth Literature as one of their second-year modules; consequently, they were introduced to resources and services available at the library. The tour helped them appreciate the crucial role that libraries play in supporting literature education and encouraging young readers. The visit made a valuable practical connection between what they are learning in the Youth Literature module and ways in which they, as future teachers, might help foster a culture of reading in their schools and community.

New addition to the National Library of Namibia collection.
The Namibian and Fractured Empires — by Namibian author Christian Fourie, written under the pen name Chrigi in Africa — are now part of the permanent national literary record.
The Namibian is a collection of short stories and poetry drawn from thirty years of living and working in the Namibian bush. Fractured Empires is the first novel in the Namibian Geopolitical Thriller Series — a story of offshore oil, sovereignty, and the specific pressures facing small African nations in a world of competing great powers.
Forbidden Ground and All Lawful Purposes — Books 2 and 3 of the series — follow next week.

Earlier this year Ms. Aina Sakaria, a Librarian at the National Library of Namibia, had an opportunity to participate in a Capacity Development training session at the XXVII SCECSAL Conference 2026 in Livingston, Zambia. She was inspired to bring the same learning experience to her colleagues at NLAS and facilitated a capacity development training today 29 September 2026, at the National Library. Capacity development is about more than just training it is the process of strengthening skills, improving organizational systems, and creating supportive environments that allow us to grow sustainably. By sharing this knowledge, we are investing in our collective ability to manage resources effectively, adapt to change, and deliver better library and information services to our communities. This session was not only about transferring skills but also about building resilience, fostering collaboration, and ensuring that our institution continues to thrive in the face of evolving challenges.
