Volunteers serving America’s communities, saving lives, and shaping futures. Established in 1941, Civil Air Patrol is the official auxiliary of the U.S.

Air Force and as such is a member of its Total Force. In its auxiliary role, CAP operates a fleet of 555 single-engine aircraft and 2,250 small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) and performs about 90% of all search and rescue operations within the contiguous United States as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Often using innovative cellphone forensics and radar analysis software, CAP was credited by the AFRCC with saving 108 lives last year. CAP’s 56,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. As a nonprofit organization, CAP plays a leading role in aerospace education using national academic standards-based STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education resources. Senior Milestone Achievement!

Last Thursday, Cobb County Composite Squadron recognized First Lieutenant Roger Merritt for earning the Grover Loening Aerospace Award.

The Grover Loening Aerospace Award is a professional development award presented by the Civil Air Patrol to senior members who complete Level III of the Senior Member Professional Development Program.

First awarded in 1964, the award is named in honor of Grover Cleveland Loening, a pioneering aviator and the first civilian member of the National Air and Space Museum’s Advisory Board.

A Civil Air Patrol cadet who later commanded the Puerto Rico Wing as an adult member will be the
next commander of CAP’s Southeast Region.

“I am humbled and honored to accept this new leadership responsibility ascommander of Civil Air Patrol’s Southeast Region,” Rodriguez said. “As a former cadet, this opportunity holds special meaning for me. I know firsthand the lasting
impact CAP can have, and I welcome the opportunity to help others find purpose, grow as leaders, and make a difference through service.”

Col. Juan Rodriguez is the next commander of
Civil Air Patrol's Southeast Region. Rodriguez, who commanded the Puerto Rico Wing from 2022-2025, will succeed Col. Jeffrey L. Garrett, the region’s commander since 2023.

Georgia Wing,

I'm looking forward to what we will accomplish together over the next three years. We'll continue building on the strong foundation laid by those who came before us. I want to thank Col. Willis for his leadership and for helping prepare both the Wing and myself for the future. Because of his efforts, we're in a great position to keep moving forward. We're seeing new technologies improve how we carry out our missions, not just in Emergency Services, but also in how we train and prepare for a changing world. My focus as Commander is our members. I want every member to have the opportunity to grow, contribute, and reach their full potential. That only happens when we work together and help each other succeed.

Georgia Wing,

Thank you for the privilege of serving as your commander for the last three years. It has been an honor to serve alongside you and see the dedication you bring to our missions, our cadets, and one another.

The credit for our successes belongs to you—the members of Georgia Wing. You gave your time, shared your talents, stepped up when needed, and kept moving us forward. Across this wing, your work made a difference. I am proud of what you accomplished and grateful to have been part of it.

Thank you for your trust, your support, and your willingness to serve. Most of all, thank you for taking care of each other. That is what makes Georgia Wing great.

As my time in command comes to a close, I promise you this: I am not going away. I will continue serving GAWG and every member of this great wing. I am excited to see where Col Davidson and all y’all go, and hope that I can help.
