🦠🎉 **Congratulations to Dr. Paul Kirchberger!**

We're excited to celebrate MMG Assistant Professor **Dr. Paul Kirchberger**, who has received a **$1.25 million, five-year NIH R35 MIRA award!**

His research explores how tiny bacteria-killing viruses, known as bacteriophages, evolve and organize their genomes. Understanding these viruses could eventually help scientists design phages that specifically target harmful bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant pathogens.

A fantastic achievement for Dr. Kirchberger, his lab, and our MMG department!

🧬🌱 **Faculty Research Spotlight: Dr. Robert L. Burnap**

How do cyanobacteria capture CO₂ efficiently enough to power photosynthesis?

Recent work coauthored by Dr. Robert Burnap identifies a previously unrecognized small protein, SbtC, that helps regulate bicarbonate transport in cyanobacteria.

In a second publication, Dr. Burnap explores the molecular machinery connecting electron transfer, energy conservation, and CO₂ uptake.
