Dolores Huerta leaves behind a powerful legacy. She believed that when workers organize and stand together, they can win dignity and justice. Her fearlessness and commitment to that vision shaped labor history, transformed the lives of millions of migrant workers and farmworkers, and inspired generations of women labor leaders to stand up and join the fight.

My heartfelt condolences go out to her family and to all who loved and were inspired by her.

In only two years, the Department of Toxic Substances Control got 1.5 million from Alco Iron & Metals for polluting—while Cal/OSHA has only gotten $7,000 for the death of three workers. I commend the DTSC for their work. Maybe Cal/OSHA should take a note from them.

This weekend I had the joy of joining Hayward Unified for their third annual Filipino American celebration at Schaefer Elementary School! This event celebrates the Filipino American community’s rich history, culture, and contributions that make California the great state that it is.

Yesterday was Larry Itliong Day! In September 1965, Itliong led Filipino farmworkers in Delano as they walked off the grape fields, kicking off a strike that lasted five years. California now marks October 25 in his honor. Remembering Larry Itliong is part of reflecting on our labor history and celebrating the workers who fought for the protections so many of us have today.

Solar and battery systems like this will keep fire stations, community centers, food banks, and city buildings across Berkeley, Hayward, Fremont, and Livermore powered during outages, while lowering energy costs.
