May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It is a great time to remember that mental health support is vital for everyone, including people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), like Aaron.

Aaron faced overwhelming anxiety and repeated crises during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. He struggled to leave home and engage in daily activities. With support from the Central Valley Regional Center, Inc. and the START program, he and his family developed tools to improve daily life.

The program provides 24/7 crisis response and works to prevent crises before they happen. It assists individuals and families in building stability and connecting with local supports.

See if the START program is available in your area and check out other mental health resources available to Californians at: https://www.dds.ca.gov/newsletter/mental-health-awareness-month-the-start-program

“My wings are not clipped anymore. I am free to fly high,” Cindy Lee Misner beamed during her recent interview with the Department.

Cindy has found new freedom and confidence in living independently as a participant in the Technology Pilot Program. This Department initiative explores the use of technology to deliver remote services and supports to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

In her futuristic home, Cindy connects with Strategies to Empower People's (STEP) remote support staff and uses smart devices to manage her daily life and health, including:

• an automated medication dispenser for prescriptions delivered right-on-time
• heat sensors that monitor her temperature and heart rate
• a hand-held reading device that scans text to aid in comprehension

It’s a system of supports that are helping her enjoy life to the fullest and giving her more time to pursue the things she loves most, like being an artist.

The Technology Pilot Program was launched in 2022 as a partnership between Alta California Regional Center, the Department, and service providers STEP, On My Own Independent Living Services, and East Bay Innovations.

Did you know that May is Older Californians Month? It’s a great time to start conversations about aging, daily needs, and long-term support. Check in with your regional center service coordinator on how to champion healthy aging and well-being.
